A History Lesson

So a little about me. Some of it can be found on the About... page, but I'll add a bit of history here I  missed off.

I've been wargaming on and off since my early teens (I'm now 30). It started off as a bunch of friends playing 2nd Edition Warhammer 40k. I collected Genestealer Cult until I made the logical jump to Tyranids once the Codex (and the game Tyranid Attack - anyone remember that?) was first released.

Necromunda in the mid-90's captured my imagination big style - and for a couple of years we regularly played our own 6-player league in my parents attic. Then my friends all started growing up, and wargaming declined - though my eyes never stopped being longingly drawn to the Games Workshop store front whenever we walked past it in the shopping centre.

Then I got married when I was 21 to a woman just as geeky as I am - and I no longer needed to hide my secret desires.

Yo and I both took up the wargaming mantle, getting into Mordheim and an old copy of Warhammer Quest I'd bought off my friend several years earlier. Whilst Yo's interest isn't quite as kindled as mine (she mostly favours Warhammer Quest) I continue to carry the torch for both of us.

Up until then it was all Games Workshop. To be honest, until I started actively looking around on the net a couple of years ago, I wasn't really aware much else existed in terms of Fantasy and Sci-Fi gaming. Now whilst I actively paint and game with miniatures from various other lines (Reaper, Darksword, Otherworld, RedBox etc), old habits die hard, and I still find myself returning to Games Workshop rulesets - even if I do heavily modify them for my own style.

Apart from Warhammer Quest, I now primarily play solo skirmish games. As an only child I guess I learned the skills from an early age. I'm fairly objective so to be honest I prefer it this way. When I game I may have a favourite side, but if things go against them, I don't (usually) help them out by playing biased. It also means if a particular rule bugs the hell out of me I can adjust it without endless debate.

It's made for an interesting ruleset (pretty much a mix of Mordheim, Necromunda, Lord of the Rings Strategy and Warhammer Quest. A game I affectionately call Mord-omunda of the Rings Quest.)

Painting wise, I think I've come a long way in the past couple of years. As a teenager I never took that side of the hobby seriously, preferring to either slap the paint on and leave it at that, or just play with bare minis. A little later I plan to take some pics of some of the minis I've done over the years. Hopefully this will document the rise from some truly awful paint jobs to minis that, whilst no where near pro level, I am getting more and more proud of.
